KEY E-LEARNING COMPONENT Simulations should be a central component of any e-learning strategy because... They work. People generally retain only a small portion of what they read or hear in a lecture. Our minds aren't built to acquire knowledge that way. People learn by doing. No one learns how to ride a bike by sitting through a class — and it's no different with coaching, sales, or other business skills. When people learn by doing, they become energized, they stick with it, and they learn more. They're faster. Imagine a salesperson learning about a new product. He would need to spend almost 8 hours in an on-line class or reading about it to pick up the core concepts. He could get the same amount of learning in as little as 30 minutes by working through a simulation. Where is that person's time better spent, completing an online course or on the job, selling? They're more effective. If you had two groups of learners, and one group sat through a traditional e-learning course while the other worked through a simulation, the outcomes would be very different. People in the first group may be able to recall facts and information, but probably wouldn't be able to apply them on the job right away. But the second group would be equipped to use the information to make better decisions – ones that impact their performance and productivity on the job. With simulations, you teach exactly what people need to know to perform better, directly within the context of their jobs. There's no skill translation needed. Compare and See
